Altirra v1.8 Test 12 is released. Altirra is an Atari 8 bit Emulator on the Windows/DOS platform. Altirra emulates several models of the 8-bit Atari computers. This includes the the 800, 800XL, and 130XE versions. It has a lot of options, and compatibility is decent especially given the emulator's early stages. It also supports some copy protected games properly in emulation.

Quizard 2.2, Patch-Free
I futzed around a bit with the function that sends the initial 20 bytes to the protection device last night. I discovered that if I killed the random number that it used as a seed and made it 1, the game would simply dump out the key bytes. Heartened, I wrote some functionality to take those bytes and fashion an appropriate 8-byte return value from them, and with only a 4-byte patch to always return 1 rather than a nuclear NOP-out of nearly an entire function, all the games started firing up.

Because it's written in java many young devs find it interesting to learn how the emulator works.

MESS is a source-available project which documents the hardware for a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles, and calculators through software emulation, as MAME does for arcade games. As a nice side effect to this documentation, MESS allows software and games for these hardware platforms to be run on modern PCs.
