EmuCR: SDLVICE Thanks MrX_Cuci for submitting news
VICE 2.3.17 SPS is released. The current version VICE emulates the C64, the C64DTV, the C128, the VIC20, almost all PET models, the PLUS4 and the CBM-II (aka C610). PREVIEW version of VICE with enhanced G64 support.

VICE 2.3.17 SPS Changelog:

PREVIEW version of VICE with enhanced G64 support.
This is our special gift to the community, and we're sure many users will appreciate it. You won't need a KryoFlux to benefit from it, many images that are floating around and needed to be fixed will now work right away. We'll hopefully be working with the VICE team to get our updates included in the official sources, but until that happens we'll continue to provide a second fork (W32 build as of today) on our site which will have extended G64 support. The new circuitry simulation code allows VICE to read data recorded at a certain bitcell density to be read back at a different bitcell density. e.g. data recorded at 3.5us to be read back at 3.5us correctly as well as get the expected results when reading at say 3.25us timing setting. E.g. all RapidLok protected titles rely on this to be working Please note that this preview does not yet enable half-track support, which will come in an update within the next month. Please see the README file included with the builds for further limitations, this still is a PREVIEW version.

Attached is a picture of a game that for sure won't run on an unmodified version of VICE: "Defender Of The Crown" by Cinemaware. It features V-MAX! v2 protection and perform a precise density check on the disk as soon as the player goes raiding. This image will not run in the current official build of VICE. To give you a chance to try this new feature, the G64 for "Defender Of The Crown", courtesy of CW Holdings, Inc., is included with the VICE build on our website. The new build of VICE will also run many other G64 files now that did fail before. If you ever tried some of the early Rainbow Arts or Magic Bytes titles (so called BetaSkip protection by MWS), like Giana Sisters, Turrican or Blue Angel 69... all of these should work flawlessly now.

  1. Best C64 emulator by far!!!

  2. Good news.
Although, one of these teams really need to work on the colours, they're just sooo wrong, way too much purple. My original C64 is more blue and cyan. Perhaps look at a yuv colour tint option similar to Micro64, something I have been tweaking in Micro64 and it almost looks like my original C64.

And WTF is it with comments NOT publishing in Firefox or Chrome, for me, only IE 9 ?

Also, this is NOT the best emulator by far.

  3. #3 there was once on EmuCR some version with a fixed colors palette - just google for "winvice-2.3-x86-palette-fixed"

  5. #4 With this new palette fix version you can change the current palette with:
    - MENU TAB "Settings / Video settings..."
    - TAB "VICII Palette"
    - also don't forgot to check "External Palette"

...or you can make your own palette an than load it into emu - that's why also is this the best emu

  6. @Above, many thanks for the link.
Unfortunately, those pre-made palettes are still wrong.
Here, take a look at my Micro64 colour test

    http://i47.tinypic.com/equumx.jpg

This is as close as I can get to my real C64 running on a Philips CM 8833, and, all the other colours are almost spot on. Now try to get close to that with Vice and other colours give off a strange tint, especially greys.

Anyway, will try the fixed version, thanks.

  8. #8 maybe try also on below link...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/vice-emu/files/releases/binaries/windows/

In case that a default settings for sound are not good just try to use the following settings:

    - MENU TAB "Settings / C64 model settings..."
    - at SID model chose 6581R4AR 3789 (reSID-fp)
    - MENU TAB "Settings / Sound settings..."
    - Synchronization Method: Exact

...in case to have any problem with the sound quality just experiment more with the Sound Buffer Size and Sound Fragment Size until you got it perfect

  9. #7 yes, it looks that those pre-made palettes are still wrong, but your picture is very close from what I also remember from my C64.

Hope that guys from Micro64 doing a good job to make really perfect C64 emu one day.

    p.s.
default palette from the VICE vs CCS64 are, in my opinion, still much better...and that could be also said for the sound quality

  10. Thanks for new link, all work now.
Palettes are working, got them working before by editing the ini directly. All palettes are still way off, with the vice palette looking the best, although still not as good as Micro64. Take a look at Bruce Lee, look at the green mountains and overall green tint in the Vice pic.

Sound is good in Vice, using xc64sc and above tips, still not quite there yet. Listen to LED Storm on a real C64 then in Vice.

  11. Unofficial build BTW

  12. #11 Regarding VICE sound vs real C64 can't tell
but also there are players that comes pretty close like let say last version of Sidplay2/w
    http://www.gsldata.se/c64/spw/
that is now even very CPU intensive, probably because of better filter emulation, but it also sounds now very very close...specially if filter distortion emulation is set to Alankila6581R4AR_3789.
Anyway SID emulation is difficult to emulate 100% because it also consist of analog elements and even different series of the same chips never sounds equally.

  17. #16 Thanks for info for the java version, but still prefer the minimalistic look of the last Sidplay/w 2.6 (see #15 for link) and must say after tested it that this last version is now very very close to the real thing.
