MAME4droid Changelog:
Rollback NetPlay: compatibility and stability
Rollback is what makes NetPlay feel like two people on one machine instead of
two people waiting for each other. This release is mostly about the games that
could not use it, and the sessions that fell apart halfway through.
Street Fighter III now runs in rollback
All of CPS-3 does: 3rd Strike and the earlier two, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure,
Red Earth. Until now these were stuck in Lockstep, which is the worst place for
a fighting game to be.
The problem was size. To rewind, rollback keeps dozens of snapshots of the
machine in memory, and a CPS-3 snapshot was enormous — it carried the entire
game loaded from the CD, tens of megabytes of code, graphics and samples that
never change while you play. Snapshots now leave all of that behind and keep
only what the game actually writes to. What used to be far past any sane limit
now fits with room to spare.
Games that already fit benefit too: smaller snapshots mean less memory and less
work on every correction.
More games run in rollback
The host now hands its machine state to the joiner by default, so games that
used to refuse rollback because both sides could not be trusted to boot
identically now qualify.
Sessions that used to break
Joining and resyncing. A drop-in join or a mid-game resync would sometimes
leave one machine frozen, or the joiner on a black screen, with nothing to do
but disconnect. The snapshot was being taken wherever the emulation happened to
be at that instant, sometimes in the middle of a frame with work still pending.
It is now always taken at the end of a frame, once the video chip has finished
and the interrupt queue is drained. The state that arrives is one the other
machine can actually resume from.
Brief network drops. Lose enough packets in a row and one frame would stay
a guess forever: the game kept running, quietly wrong, and the two sides drifted
apart over the next minutes. That frame is now re-requested from the other
player and the session repairs itself. Tested by cutting the connection on
purpose, over and over.
Dials, spinners and 4-way sticks. Part of the live control state was not
included in a rollback, so analog games could jump or fall back to a stale
reading after a correction. It travels with the state now.
Quick messages
The last release said there would be no chat, and there still isn't one. What
there is now is a short list of fixed phrases — hello, good game, wait a moment,
insert coin and press start, I have to go. Picking one sends a number, not text,
and the other player's device shows that phrase in their own language. Nothing
typed, nothing to moderate, nothing stored. You can mute the ones you receive.
Drop-in BIOS selection
For games with several BIOS versions, the picker was starting on an arbitrary
one and, if you pressed Exit instead of choosing, it published your room anyway.
It now starts on the game's default BIOS, and Exit cancels the whole thing.
Smaller things
Dialogs start with a sensible button selected, so a gamepad can go through
NetPlay without touching the screen. Disconnect is never the one selected,
and it now sits at the bottom of the menu, away from the rest.
The public room board shows the busiest countries on a line of its own.
Both devices must be updated
The network protocol changed. An updated device and an old one will refuse each
other when connecting, which is deliberate: the alternative is a session that
looks fine and slowly falls apart.
